It is recognized by the GHRSST data management experts, through discussions from 2017 to 2019, and confirmed at the annual GHRSST science team meetings, that a more defined sharing of data management resources will be beneficial to the future growth of GHRSST and encourage more participation by other potential data producers. In November of 2011, in Lucca, Italy, Kenneth Casey (NOAA) presents the CEOS SST-Virtual Constellation proposal, co-authored with Craig Donlon (ESA) to the CEOS Plenary. The CEOS Principals accepted and endorsed the proposal, thus creating the SST-VC. Learn more

GODAE formally closes and the pilot project becomes the Group for High Resolution SST (GHRSST), continuing to build upon the foundation of the pilot project. Learn more

The GHRSST Project Office moves to the University of Reading with Andrea Kaiser-Weiss as the GHRSST coordinator and Silvia Bragaglia-Pike as the GHRSST administrator. Funding was provided by ESA and the UK National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO). Craig Donlon (ESA) continued in his role as GHRSST chair.

2006

The Multi-Sensor Improved Sea Surface Temperature (MISST) project was launched in the United States to improve access to Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data products derived from a suite of sensors. Serving as the primary funding source for the U.S. component of GHRSST, MISST involved key organizations such as NASA, NOAA, and the Naval Oceanographic Office. This funding was primarily facilitated through the National Ocean Partnership Program (NOPP). Learn more here and here

2005

The first GHRSST Technical Data Specification (GDS) is established, emphasizing data standardization and interoperability, and forming the basis of all GHRSST data production.

GHRSST products are first made available. Under the R/GTS framework, data from Regional Data Assembly Centres (RDACs) are ingested by a Global Data Assembly Centre (GDAC) and distributed publicly. Final archiving and further distribution were handled by the Long-term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF). Learn more

The Medspiration project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), was launched to integrate multi-sensor sea surface temperature data into a comprehensive suite of products. It marked the establishment of the first active GHRSST RDAC. Learn more

The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High Resolution SST Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP) is initiated as an international collaboration for ocean forecasting activities to address an emerging need for accurate high resolution sea surface temperature products. Craig Donlon (Met Office) founded the GHRSST-PP and set up the first GHRSST Project Office at the Met Office with funding from the European Space Agency. Learn more
