We are thrilled to welcome Chong Jia, a Ph.D. student in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, University of Miami, to the GHRSST Science Team. Chong brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of knowledge to our dynamic community, specializing in physical oceanography, satellite remote sensing, and air-sea interaction.
Chong’s academic journey is marked by a Bachelor of Science from Ocean University of China and a Master of Science from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, University of Miami. His professional background centers around key areas, including physical oceanography, satellite remote sensing, and air-sea interaction, setting the stage for his impactful contributions to SST research.
Within the realm of satellite SST retrievals, Chong’s expertise shines in error budget analysis and algorithm improvement, particularly focusing on high latitudes. His research interests extend to the ocean skin effect and diurnal warming studies at high latitudes.
Currently involved in the Multi-sensor Improved Sea-Surface Temperature (MISST) project, Chong is using SST and other meteorological data from Saildrone vehicles to study upper ocean thermal stratifications and validate satellite SST retrievals at high latitudes.
Chong’s connection with GHRSST dates back to 2019 when he first became involved. His advisor, and fellow GHRSST Science Team member, Peter Minnett, presented their collaborative research at the 20th GHRSST International Science Team Meeting in Frascati, Italy. For Chong, being part of the GHRSST Science Team is an opportunity to communicate with and learn from other members, enriching his research experience. He values the chance to share his work with the GHRSST community, broadening its impact.
As an early-career scientist himself, Chong offers valuable advice to others embarking on their scientific journey: to have determination and always keep an open mind.
For those interested in reaching out to Chong Jia or learning more about his work, he can be contacted at chong.jia@earth.miami.edu. Connect with Chong on LinkedIn to stay updated on his contributions to the exciting field of SST research.
Join us in extending a warm welcome to Chong Jia as he adds his expertise and enthusiasm to the GHRSST Science Team!
